Options for every interest


It's time to start making plans for summer. Now that we know public schools will begin the fall term on Aug. 20, local day camps are finalizing their schedules. There are so many options that fit a wide range of activities, schedules and prices. Where to begin?

If you have little ones entering preschool in the fall, you might see whether the school offers a summer program. That can be a good way to ease them into the new environment. (Several offer the voluntary prekindergarten program in the summer; get a list in the BocaParent blog.)





For older kids, there are options tailored to almost every interest. Do you want an enriching experience, where they hone a sports skill or a talent in performing? Or do you want a strictly recreational summer?

Academic

 

Summer Youth College at Palm Beach State College


Kids age 8 to 14 take classes in music, arts, math, computer, dance, reading, pottery, sports, language, leadership and more. Classes run Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26-Aug. 2. Before and after care

Arts

Sol Children Theatre Troupe

Showtime Performing Arts Camp

Kids in kindergarten through 12th grade gain performance skills and experience, as well as confidence, self-esteem and a love of theatrical arts. Students will learn to audition, act, sing, dance and perform from such hits as Cinderella, Legally Blonde, Godspell and two mini-camps inspired by the hit TV show Glee. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; before and after care available. Session 1 runs June 11-July 6; Session 2 runs July 9-Aug. 3. Glee mini-

Storytime Drama Mini-Camp at Sunflower Creative Arts

Kids age 5 to 7 focus on physical, social, and artistic development, exploring creativity, vocalization, and movement through stories, improvisation, role-play, masks, puppetry, and theatre games. The primary goals include encouraging free expression and fun ways to use the imagination. 9:30-11:30 a.m. Four one-week sessions: July 9-13, July 16-20, July 23-27 and July 30-Aug. 3. Theatre Workshop Mini-Camp at Sunflower Creative Arts

Kids age 7 to 12 produce short skits and creative improvisations emphasizing public speaking and creative movement. The children not only learn the dynamics of performing and acting, but how to be caring citizens and why teamwork is so important. The students will enjoy high-energy rehearsals with theatre games, pantomime, and improvisation. A family-friendly performance will be held at the end of each week. 12:30-2:30 p.m. Four one-week sessions: July 9-13, July 16-20, July 23-27 and July 30-Aug. 3. Recreational

City of Boca Raton camps

The city of Boca Raton offers active recreational camps for kids entering kindergarten through eighth grade.  They include six-week sessions offering field trips, sports and arts and crafts. The city also handles the registration for camps at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, the Boca Raton Children's Museum and the science camp at Sugar Sand Park. Mail-in registration begins April 16 for city residents; May 7 for non-residents. Watch the city website for applications.

Kids age 3-15 participate in a structured, health-centered day, beginning with a morning workout. Campers then spend the day with a rotation of classes, including music, yoga, martial arts, science, arts and crafts, sports and swimming at Grandview Preparatory School, 336 Spanish River Blvd. NW.

Camp Yeladim at B'nai Israel

Kids age 2-5 run and play, cut, sort and count, sing songs, dance and explore art. Literature will be explored and vocabulary expanded as children’s imagination is celebrated. Plus, they'll splahs in the water park playground, do cooking, sports, arts and crafts and field trips. 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; before and after care available. Camp Keshet at B'nai Torah

Kids age 2-6 enjoy a water park, sports, art, science, Hebrew conversation, cooking and more. Adventure Camp at Temple Beth El

Kids age 2-4 use their imaginations to go on faraway adventures - to the Wild West, the circus, the farm, the rainforest, Israel and many other places. Kids participate in music and movement, water and outdoor play, arts and crafts, gardening, science, zumba, physical education and Shabbat sing-a-longs. Special activities include a petting zoo, a teddy bear picnic, carnival day, live animal shows, and more. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.; or 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Two-week sessions run from May 21-Aug. 10 at Temple Beth El Beck Family Campus, 9800 Yamato Rd.

Camp Adventure at Kiddie Academy

Kids age 1-8 will explore how things work, travel to faraway places on "Vacation Adventures", have some "Wild & Wacky Fun" and compete in sports games for medals. Kids will participate in music and movement, water and outdoor play, arts and crafts, gardening, science, and cooking. This girls-only basketball camp for ages 10-15 will focus on fundamental basketball skills and character development.
