A dad’s-eye view of Selena Gomez show
Jul 28th, 2011 by bocaparent
Jeff Kleinman.

Jeff Kleinman, dad.

BocaParent reader Jeff Kleinman was among the few poor dads in the squealing tween masses at the Selena Gomez concert Thursday night at Mizner Park amphitheater.

His Twitter stream from the concert was so popular, it started “trending” for the Miami area. As one follower put it, Jeff Kleinman Tweets so you don’t have to. Here are some of our favorites from Jeff’s live stream:

7:45 p.m.: Question of all time: Are 12 port-a-potties and 2 sinks enough for all the tweens/teens and their moms at Selena Gomez concert?!

7:54 p.m.: A pro ticket scalper trying to buy and resell Selena Gomez tickets. “It’s what I do for a living,” he says. No biz for him. “Tough night.”

8:23 p.m.:The Selena Gomez concert is a good place for tween boys to meet tween girls. But there are no boys here. Except some dads.

8:27 p.m.: Teens shrieking. Hearing loss. At Selena Gomez concert.

8:31 p.m.: Is Justin Bieber watching #SelenaGomez perform in Boca? Scanning the crowd.

8:33 p.m.: #SelenaGomez is three songs into her concert. Does she have more than three? The girls are on their chairs. Should I climb on one?

8:52 p.m.: Like, OMG, my spouse is wearing earplugs at the #SelenaGomez concert! Does the snack bar sell those? She came prepared.

9:03 p.m.: A mother sitting next to me at the #SelenaGomez concert never looked up from her phone and now has left. She’s no fan!

Selena Gomez concert.

Jeff Kleinman's view of the stage.

9:11 p.m.: The two girls like #SelenaGomez — but LOVE talented opening act Christina Grimmie, a YouTube star.

9:22 p.m.: Wondering if #SelenaGomez is breaking Boca Raton’s noise ordinance.

9:30 p.m.: Dreaming of a Denny’s breakfast after the #SelenaGomez concert!

9:32 p.m.: OMG … I am dancing in the aisle to a #SelenaGomez ditty of which I do not know the name (or understand the words).

9:34 p.m.: “You have been an amazing first audience!” #SelenaGomez just told those rocking in Boca Raton (Mouth of the Rat?) F-L-A!

9:42 p.m.: The crowd is chanting “Selena” at the #SelenaGomez concert. Will she sing one for the parents? Maybe “Yesterday?”

9:45 p.m.: Will #SelenaGomez meet her adoring fans? Where will she eat tonight? Is she staying at the Delray Beach Motel 8?

9:47 p.m.: #SelenaGomez’s finale is … “Magic.” An oldie! “Thank you guys so much for coming out to my first tour ever!” She thanked parents!

9:49 p.m.: #SelenaGomez’s concert is blowing confetti all over Boca! Littering violation!

Thanks, Jeff. We feel like we were there. Who else saw the show and survived? Share your quips in the comments.

Coming up: Arts for the family
Feb 14th, 2011 by bocaparent

Wizard of Oz accompanied orchestra. The Mizner Park amphitheater is gearing up for a slate of shows, many of them good for kids and families.

A youth arts festival, followed by Boca Raton’s annual Festival of the Arts, will bring a talent competition, an America’s Got Talent sensation, young local performers, and a screening of The Wizard of Oz accompanied by a live orchestra, among other shows.

It starts Feb. 25 with the Next Generation … Youth Arts Weekend Festival – three free shows over three evenings:

  • 7 p.m. Feb. 25: ZMC Entertainment stage show.
  • 7 p.m. Feb. 26: Youth Orchestra of Palm Beach County
  • 4 p.m. Feb. 27: Up With People stage show.

The next weekend, the weeklong Festival of the Arts begins. There are several shows geared toward kids, most notably these:

  • Future Stars Performing Arts Competition - The Boca Rotary Club’s annual event for vocal and dance students from local middle and high schools. 7 p.m. March 4. Tickets are $20-35.
  • The Wizard of Oz – Digitally remastered, the classic movie will be shown on the big screen, accompanied live by the Boca Raton Symphonia. 7:30 p.m. March 11. Tickets are $15-85.
  • Jackie Evancho – The 10-year-old girl with perfect pitch became famous after her appearance last year on America’s Got Talent. She’ll appear in Boca with Young Stars of the Metropolitan Opera. 7:30 p.m. March 12. Tickets are $35-125. Read more about Jackie.

If you have a budding musician or singer in the house, there’s no better inspiration than seeing a great live performance. The festival lineup also includes Canadian Brass, Latin pianists, ballet and a guitar virtuoso.

You may also be able to enjoy the music from the center of Mizner Park, outside the amphitheater. The city has been talking about closing it off (or charging an entrance fee) to lawn chair and cooler-toting visitors – but has no plans to do so for these shows.

Mizner Park: Officially a ‘great’ place
Nov 18th, 2010 by bocaparent

The American Planning Association was in town today to officially name Mizner Park among 10 great public spaces for 2010.

Mizner Park. When it was built, nearly 20 years ago, it was “pretty cutting edge,” said Marie York of the association. It was a pioneer in mixed-use development, with public space, stores, offices and residences all in one place. Cities all over the country have tried to replicate it.

The association chooses places for the designation that have a sense of place and draw people in.

City officials, businesses and other community leaders gathered at Mizner Park for the presentation and the unveiling of a plaque near one of the fountains to commemorate the day.

They also gave out posters with a nice photo of Mizner Park – that was replicated onto a cake made by the Boca Raton Resort &  Club.

Also on this year’s list of great public spaces:

  • Charles W. Ireland Sculpture Garden, Birmingham, Ala.
  • Ferry Building, San Francisco
  • Fountain Square, Bowling Green, Ky.
  • The Emerald Necklace, Boston, Mass.
  • Campus Martius Park, Detroit
  • Bryant Park, New York City
  • Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia
  • Main Plaza, San Antonio, Texas
  • Percival Landing Boardwalk and Park, Olympia, Wash.
