Keeping to-do lists under control
BY AMY MORRIS
As we go dashing into the busy holiday season, it's more important than ever to manage your time - including stopping to savor the moments. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your busy day/life:
- Be realistic in your goals - Pick five errands to complete in one day, not 10.
- Make a schedule - Block out times for emails, calls, mail and other office functions, as well as for errands, home upkeep, social commitments and yourself.
- Make lists, prioritize them, come up with a plan of attack - and stick to it! "To Do" daily list; "Soon" list, "Someday" list and "Fix It" list.
- Try not to busy yourself with the less important items - and don't let menial distractions get you off track. Turn your cellphone on vibrate or silent.
- Prepare the night before - Get briefcases, backpacks, items for errands, lunches, clothing all ready the evening before. Review your To Do list for the next day.
- Plan meals ahead of time - This cuts down on trips to the market for one or two items.
- Spend your time wisely - Make the most of your shopping day. Plan errands according to a route
that allows you to get the most accomplished in an efficient manner and with the least amount of back tracking. Take a list to the store with you to make sure you get what you need.
- Multi-task - What tasks can you accomplish at the same time as another? Think laundry: Put in
washer, pay bills, flip to dryer, prepare meal, fold ...
- Get help - If you need it, ask.
- Breathe - and be flexible. If you cannot get done one day what you thought you could do, look at
your schedule/list and make a swap - one task for another or simply move that task to another day.
